When speaking to people about Solarpunk and browsing the Internet, quite often I encounter an interesting question: if you were to design a Solarpunk game, whether pen-and-paper RPG, a visual novel or something else, where should the conflict be? Should there be any factions? The world is supposed to be utopian, so where is any drama in that?

I could write essays and books on this topic, but just as an example I wanted to show you a quick sketch of a faction system which could be used in a Solarpunk world / game. Each of the groups below should be distinct and internally varied, allowing opportunities for both alliances and conflicts in any combination.

We've just wrapped up the first edition of SolariseCon 2022, our free and online conference. It was

A day of global conversation on Solarpunk, an activist movement and a subgenre of speculative fiction in which humanity has addressed climate change and made progress towards creating a more sustainable and equitable world. It spanned four panels of writers, activists, makers, academics and artists will share their expertise, experiences and perspectives on Solarpunk.

The event was streamed on YouTube and PeerTube with several watching parties around the world, including the Politecnico di Torino in Italy and Fishing Fortress Science Fiction College in Chongqing, China. We had 383 guests registered via our Eventbrite page!

Connecting perspectives

I'm really happy that our conference allowed experts from very different specializations to meet: not only writers and filmmakers, but also scientists, educators, activists and innovators. 11go maja 2022 roku Mistycyzm Popkulturowy opublikował na YouTube wideoesej Problemy ze słonecznym optymizmem | Solarpunk, poruszając temat tego nurtu prawdopodobnie po raz pierwszy dla tak szerokiej publiczności w Polsce. Wcześniej robiła to między innymi Asia Kaniewska w Radiu Kapitał i mój własny blog.

Przede wszystkim chciałem podziękować Mistycyzmowi za zajęcie się niesamowicie ważnym nurtem kultury, który coraz bardziej nabiera tempa!

Kilkakrotnie próbowałem zostawić pod wideo rozległy komentarz, jednak tajemne algorytmy YouTube nie pozwalają mi go zamieścić - toteż chętnie podzielę się dodatkowym kontekstem tutaj :)

Zgadzam się z ogromną częścią tego, co mówi w swoim wideoeseju Mistycyzm Popkulturowy. Jest jednak kilka punktów, z którymi chętnie bym polemizował lub rozszerzył:

Solarpunk nie jest naturalnie powstałym ruchem artystycznym

Całkowicie zgadzam się z tym, że Solarpunk nie jest czymś, co powstało naturalnie wobec jednej czy kilku wybitnych prac, które później wyznaczyły kierunek całego nurtu, organicznie obudowywanego przez kolejnych artystów. Jest on bardzo celowym projektem, który ma dopiero stworzyć podwaliny pod taki ruch, dać mu narzędzia i słownik, którym będzie mógł się posługiwać.

The Jacobin Magazine has recently called for More Radical Climate Fiction after reviewing the winning stories of Grist Climate Fiction Contest, which in the editorial's opinion didn't go deep enough into politics or conflicts of the climate change.

It's a pretty common criticism of Solarpunk as a budding genre. In aiming to paint an utopian and highly aesthetic vision of a better world many authors choose to leave a lot of politics and potential struggles out of their stories.

I think that we don't need to avoid politics or community conflicts, even open struggles in our dreams of a better tomorrow. For the past few months I've been working on a list of story prompts - and concrete Solarpunk communities which don't shy from hard questions while still being full of hope. I'd like to share some of them with you.

Wizytówka Cryptoparty na stronie Asów Internetu

11go lutego 2021 zostałem zaproszony na konferencję "Asy Internetu" organizowaną przez Fundację "Szkoła z Klasą" wraz z Google. Mój występ znalazł się w części przeznaczonej dla nauczycieli i w przeciwieństwie do zwykłego Cryptoparty kierowanego bardziej do samych uczniów, skupiał się na tym w jaki sposób opowiadam o cyberbezpieczeństwie na swoich zajęciach.

W ciągu 30 minut przybliżyłem zainteresowanym pedagogom podstawy podstaw cyberbezpieczeństwa i pokazałem narzędzia, które mogą wzbudzić zainteresowanie ich podopiecznych, szczególnie HaveIBeenPwned i Insecam dobrze prezentujące tematykę haseł, oraz Lightbeam jako świetny przykład problematyki internetowych ciastek.
